The eCall automatic emergency call system for vehicles sold within the European Union, was introduced in 2015 and has been a mandatory requirement for all new cars in the EU since 2018. eCall systems currently make use of 2G/3G circuit-switched cellular networks. The European Commission's initiative to update the eCall standards and legislation to transition eCall to 4G and 5G networks is ongoing. The automotive industry will need NGeCall test solutions to deliver eCall modules that include the new NGeCall functions. In future years, it is expected that an upcoming Chinese eCall standard will also require 4G/5G packet-switched cellular networks.
Further, companies are collaborating to transition eCall to 4G and 5G networks. For instance, in February 2024, Quectel Wireless Solutions, a leading provider of IoT solutions worldwide, and Rohde & Schwarz have collaborated to validate Quectel’s cutting-edge 5G eCall module. The AG56xN series stands as a leading collection of 5G NR modules, utilizing the MediaTek MT2735 chipset to deliver outstanding connectivity solutions. These modules are designed to support 5G Rel-15, offering impressive data rates of up to 4.0 Gbps for downloads and 480 Mbps for uploads over a 200 MHz bandwidth. This represents a significant advancement in wireless communication speeds.
