Global sodium hypochlorite market to surpass USD 205 Million, in 2020 and is estimated to grow over 5.5% CAGR between 2021 and 2027 owing to rising utilization in wastewater treatment, household cleaning products, textile, chemical industry. Increasing acceptance of sodium hypochlorite as bleach and disinfectants in water treatment and household hygiene products is expected to propel the market growth.
The chlorination of the inlet stream to wastewater treatment plants aims to prevent sludge from bulking. When undesirable filamentous protozoans or organisms become abundant, activated sludge does not settle appropriately and thus it starts bulking. This process not only reduces the performance of the plant but also produces turbid effluent. Thus, addition of sodium hypochlorite to the sewage helps to eliminate the filamentous organisms which are primarily responsible for bulk formation. Thus, this product provides better sludge settling characteristics. Owing to this factor it is highly used for water treatment.
Sodium Hypochlorite is highly used for textile finishing for last two centuries. Nowadays, the use of sodium hypochlorite in textile processing is for the preshrinking of wool. Sodium hypochlorite has been superseded by other substances in former uses such as whitening of cotton, stonewashing jeans, and decolouration of dyed textiles. However, after its use, the bleaching effluent is submitted for a dichlorination process by using sulphite, thus the final discharge is free from oxidizing chlorine.

COVID 19 outbreak has led to imposition of shutdown of manufacturing units, travel ban and offices & marketplaces by governments across the world. Such measures have led to supply chain disruption across the world. This has negatively affected raw materials supply for sodium hypochlorite. However, as sodium hypochlorite is used to produce disinfectants, which are considered as one of the demanding products at the time of lockdown to maintain cleanliness there was a low to medium impact on sodium hypochlorite market share due to COVID 19.
