According to the FAA, the number of registrations of Unmanned Vehicles (UMVs) for commercial application increased from around 110,605 in 2018 to 451,800 in 2022. According to Goldman Sachs report, the use of drone in the U.S. in construction industry will hold the second largest share. Additionally, the U.S. government is encouraging the drone usage for agricultural purposes, especially for precision agriculture, where drone is used for accurate calculations of demand of pesticides, etc.
Further, the U.S. government is encouraging the research in various filed such as electromagnetic field and cybersecurity using drone by awarding USD 4.4 million to the universities. In June 2024, the U.S. department of defense made contract with the more than 40 technological firms to manufacture and design the system and drones for them. These steps are boosting the demand of drones in North America, which leads to holding 38% market share in the drone logistics & transportation market.
According to European organization’s estimation, the drone sector will have economic impact of around USD 10.7 billion and 1,00,000 employments in the sector. In European society, drones have huge potential to expand. As the drone has huge potential for public and private sector demand for drones is surging in European society. Also, around USD 300 is invested by Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) programs to support drone-dependent businesses.
According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), by the end of 2023, nearly 1.27 million UMVs were registered, which is 32.2 percent more than last year. Also, around 19,000 companies are operating in the drone sector. Industries, such as agriculture, animal husbandry, forestry, fishery, and aerial photography and entertainment, are including drone technology for their operations.
The rapid investments in drone indicate the healthy development of drone sector in China. Additionally, Made in China 2025 policy is not only benefiting the firms with cheap labor and low manufacturing cost but helping through generous investments into drone supply chain and UMVs.
In Japan, drones are used for spreading pesticide on crops. Many companies are investing in the agriculture drones. For instance, in January 2023, Yamaha, a leading Japanese company invested in a startup, Nileworks Inc., which designs agriculture drones.
The GCC countries are planning to reduce the dependence on oil for transportation and therefore the companies are investing in drone technology to reduce the usage of vehicles operating on fossil fuels. In February 2024, Saudi SAL, a Saudi Arabian company, partnered with Space Age for drone-based deliveries.
