For instance, in March 2024, the Indonesian government announced plans to establish a satellite network for maritime monitoring, comprising a constellation of 20 satellites developed in collaboration with Denmark's GomSpace. This initiative aims to enhance the country's capabilities in monitoring its extensive maritime territory, which includes over 17,000 islands.
The high initial installation costs of advanced telematics systems can significantly limit their adoption, particularly among smaller operators or those with constrained budgets. Many companies struggle to justify these expenses against the anticipated return on investment, leading to hesitation in implementation. Additionally, integrating new telematics solutions with existing legacy vessel systems poses a significant barrier. Incompatibility issues and the need for extensive retrofitting complicate the integration process, resulting in increased downtime and additional costs. These factors ultimately deter organizations from fully adopting modern telematics technologies.
