APAC Waterproofing Membrane Market size was over USD 1.7 billion globally in 2018 and is estimated to grow over 10.1% CAGR between 2019 and 2025.
A waterproofing membrane is a thin layer of a material which forms an impenetrable barrier over the surfaces of walls, roofs, foundations, and structural components of buildings to avoid water ingress through these surfaces. They also prevent the leakage or escape of water from water-retaining structures which represents ample market opportunities from wastewater industry growth. These waterproofing membranes are produced from various materials with an absorption rate below 4% and primarily in the range of 1% - 2%.
Waterproofing membranes can be simply laid on top or adhered to a substrate to avoid water penetration. The selection of an appropriate membrane is crucial to ensure compatibility with the substrate. It is also important to consider the environment where the membrane has to be applied as certain products are sensitive to the presence of moisture during application, which may lead to ineffectiveness and may hinder market share.
Waterproofing membranes offer several advantages such as durability, protection from leakage and high strength which creates market opportunities. These membranes help avoid problems associated with dampness such as metal corrosion, crumbling of plasters, and damage to electric fittings which should augment market share. The growing demand for reliable and durable materials in construction sector along with favorable government regulations to promote energy efficiency should accelerate Asia Pacific waterproofing membrane market growth.

Indian standard 3384 – 1986 lays down the specifications for bitumen primer usage in priming masonry & concrete surfaces before waterproofing membranes are applied. This standard gives the minimum requirements of the primer in terms of viscosity, flash point and water content in percentage. It also mandates that information such as the manufacturer’s name, batch number, bitumen grade and manufacturing date be clearly labeled on the bitumen primer container.
