Sustainability is becoming a major trend in aerosol packaging as manufacturers strive to reduce their environmental footprint. This includes the development of recyclable and biodegradable materials, such as aluminum and plant-based plastics, to replace traditional materials. Companies are also focusing on reducing the use of harmful propellants and improving recycling programs to enhance the end-of-life management of aerosol products. As consumers become more environmentally conscious, brands that adopt sustainable practices are likely to gain a competitive edge. This shift towards sustainability is not only driven by regulatory pressures but also by the growing demand for eco-friendly products from consumers. For instance, in September 2023, Beiersdorf announced a significant sustainability initiative for its deodorant brands in Europe, including NIVEA, 8X4, Hidrofugal, and Hansaplast. All aerosol cans for these products will contain at least 50% recycled aluminum and will be 11.6% lighter due to material reduction. This change is expected to reduce CO2 emissions in the aerosol can value chain by approximately 58%, equating to a decrease of around 30 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually.
Recent advancements in aerosol technology have led to the development of propellant-free aerosols, which eliminate the need for traditional pressurized gases. Instead, these innovative systems use alternative mechanisms, such as manual pumps or pressurized air, to dispense the product. This technology not only addresses environmental concerns by reducing reliance on greenhouse gas-emitting propellants but also allows for more precise control over product delivery. Propellant-free aerosols are gaining traction across various industries, including personal care and cleaning products, as they offer a more sustainable and user-friendly option while maintaining the convenience and effectiveness of traditional aerosol dispensers. For instance, in June 2023, APS launched twistMist, a groundbreaking twist-activated, propellant-free aerosol technology that is touted as the first of its kind. This innovative system allows for continuous dispensing without the need for pressurized cans, enabling brands to use recyclable materials such as HDPE, PET, metal, or glass for their packaging.
